A New Investigator!

Jake and Elder Johnson are still trying to get familiar with the new area by getting lost at times. As a result, it seems their hard work is starting to pay off and they are excited to finally have an investigator. They also found a new place for contacting by a University, which they consider a Gold Mine. Jake is serving in the Bangkapi Ward area. The ward has it's own website, which is fun to see.

"So good news! We have an investigator!! His name is Brother Oat and he is a really cool kid.  He does a lot of hand gestures and nodding of his head, which helps me so much when I am teaching him. I asked him if he would be baptized and he said yes!! We will keep teaching him until he is ready on the 29th of September!! So excited!!"

Brother Oat is in the pink shirt.

"This week I went to go get my work permit, but neither of us knew where we were going. We ended up taking a long 3 hour taxi ride to the middle of nowhere. Then we just went back to the office and they said that they would take care of it for me.  It was a waste of time and money.  It cost me about 700 baht! I got refunded the money though. We actually taught the taxi driver as well, so I guess it wasn't a total waste."

"I had to say the prayer in Sacrament meeting on Sunday. I said it kind of slowly and afterwards they told me that I said, we should always remember Christ's throat or something like that. haha ooops  I'll learn, so no big deal. haha  I'm starting to get better and it is still really hard. I hope that I'll be able to speak good enough by Christmas. I want to be able to talk to Grandma. The language is so hard and I failed my language milestone yesterday. That was a huge downer. The language milestones are like goals that I need to memorize. Mine were teaching points 5, 6 and 7. They are so hard, but I'll get them down eventually. I really don't like to do them because they take up my entire language study."

The ward gathers for a meal after church.

"We started this thing called the 40 day fast. It is where we write down 10 things that we think are keeping us from feeling the Spirit and we stop doing them for 40 days. It is suppose to change our desires and keep us working more effectively. You should try it too. It will be pretty awesome if it works."

"I do everything here by myself. No one cooks or does the laundry for me. I'm sorry to say that I eat Top Ramen a lot, but only some days. Most of the time we eat on the street or at KFC. It's really cheap and not too bad for us. I've bought groceries for 72 hours.  It's mostly Top Ramen, cereal and some vegetables to make the noodles more healthy, if that's possible."

"I tell everyone that I am part Thai and they go crazy! I show them my pictures and that is how I am able to talk to a lot of people here. I don't go door to door contacting. I will take your good advice and try to talk more softly. Elder Johnson tells me enough, but he grew up in the Esan area, so he speaks like them and people here don't like it. haha  Sometimes he will mess with me and will tell me a word to say in Esan, so when I order, the person gets mad at me. haha  He'll tell me the right word after, so it's all good. I know all about the class system here. I have only ridden my bike once. We always take the public transportation. That is where I talk to most people because they can't leave. haha  My contacting activity didn't go the way that I wanted it to. Nobody really wants help here, so we just went on a huge exploration and found a new place to contact near a University. There are lots of people there who will want to learn English and more about other religions. YES, Gold Mine!!"

"The only thing I've done on p-day is go to the Mall and look around. Pictures are hard to get because we are not really suppose to take pictures when we are out because it makes us look like tourists. President Senior doesn't like that. I've had to use my raincover a lot. It rains almost every day and the raindrops are huge! It's been tough, but it was a good week. I'm doing fine and everyone says to keep the "Greenie" fire burning, so that is what I plan on doing. Love you all!"
